Welcome to Tex-Mex Genealogy

The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs at Tenochtitlán, site of today's Mexico City, took only two years to complete ending in August 1521.  That period became the pivot point for a dramatic change in this part of the world as the Spanish Crown began an occupation of everything to the north and south over the next three centuries. The conquest brought about an influx of people from Spain and many other parts of world and the integration of people and culture would change the landscape of the Americas forever.  Now, more than five hundred years later, that landscape continues to change; however, many parts of that history still live in those of us who are descendants of the very people that helped to create it.  If you would like to discover more about this rich history as you try and uncover your past, then follow us here.  Whether you're just starting out or whether you are at a crossroads in your current family research, I am sure you will find some useful and interesting resources here.  Either way, I hope you find this site to be educational, engaging and entertaining as you work to discover your ancestry.

My Family
Story

My name is Ray Moralez.  I'm a native of West Texas and like so many others from Texas, New Mexico and the greater Southwest,  I have my roots in Mexico and Europe.  I am not a certified or professional genealogist but rather consider myself an obsessed genealogist.  What began as personal quest to know more about my ancestors turned into a labor of love the more I discovered.   I began to visualize the lives my ancestors must have endured; dealing with the harsh climate and terrain, trying to provide for food and shelter needs, battling disease introduced by the Europeans and the constant threat of native Indian attacks to mention a few.  Yet, I'm quite sure there were probably many good times as well; the thrill of a new adventure for some, dreams of riches for others, the holiday celebrations, marriage and the birth of a child among them.  Much of this would not be known to me had I not started work on this project.

Today, I have spent thousands of hours scouring, transcribing and indexing church and civil records, university online repositories, census records including military muster rolls and various other sources including some excellent books.  I continue to do that today and only have a few million pages to go!  I have managed to trace various branches of my ancestry back to the early 1600's and some of my roots back to Spain and other parts of southern Europe. I have to say one of the more amazing discoveries I have made thus far, is that for the better part of 200+ years beginning around 1700,  most of my ancestors remained in what is today the state of Chihuahua in Mexico, with relatively little movement.  Why?  That, my friends, is one of the many questions I would like to answer.
